Dallas Mavericks Offseason Needs

Starting Shooting Guard:
It is weird that the Mavericks just won a championship two years ago. When they won their roster was ancient, now they are facing the consequences. Vince Carter is old and OJ Mayo is very likely to leave in free agency. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is the most likely selection with their first round draft pick. He would add a shooter to the lineup to replace OJ Mayo. Maybe he can be like Mayo was supposed to be when he went to Dallas. If Pope is gone, they could go with Allen Crabbe who is also a good shooter who plays well off of the ball. There is nothing in free agency. They need to build on this position through the draft/
Starting Point Guard:
Darren Collison will likely leave in free agency which will leave a hole in the starting lineup. Mike James was good last season, but he is better suited to be coming off of the bench. I still think they should draft Caldwell-Pope if he is there, but if he is not and Michael Carter-Williams is still on the board they should snag him fast. Carter-Williams would be a good distributor who could find Dirk for open shots. If they end up getting Caldwell-Pope, they should go after Pierre Jackson or Isaiah Canaan. Both could be bench players behind Mike James for a year or two and then take over. Point guard could be less of a need if they resign Darren Collison. Collison is still not really good, but he can be serviceable for a year or two.
Starting Center:
Another direction they could go with the first pick is a center. This is less of a possibility because there are plenty of teams in front of them that need a center too. They could also resign Kaman who is a decent starter. However, Mark Cuban likes to spend money so I would not be surprised if he went after Pekovic or Jefferson. Pek would give them a nice defensive stopper inside while Jefferson is a good offensive player. I think Pek would be a better fit because Dirk is not much of a defensive player and neither is Jefferson. They cannot afford to have two defensively inept players on the inside.

Dirk is still a really good player so the Mavericks should still focus on building around him. They need help at just about every position, but both guard positions are the most urgent needs. If they got Caldwell-Pope in the draft and picked up Pek, they could put off getting a point guard for another year, but putting that off any longer would be a bad idea. I think they will make the playoffs again next season. They had bad luck this year because Dirk was injured for a lot of the season. If they got just a little bit younger and solidified the middle they could be a dangerous team come next May.
