Boston Celtics Offseason Needs

Starting Center:
Kevin Garnett is not getting any younger and center is not his natural position anyhow. Kelly Olynyk should be their number one target on draft day. He impressed scouts at the combine with his ability to hit outside shots. Couple that with his decent low post game and he could make for a very good center. He is not physical like Garnett, but he is a good rebounder. They could decide to go after Gorgui Dieng who is a physical big. He is developing a decent mid range game and he is a good shot blocker. Dieng might be a little bit of a reach from where they are drafting, but if Olynyk is off of the board they may have to take him. As of now, they cannot afford anyone in free agency due to some massive contracts. This hurts since they could go after someone like Al Jefferson who would provide a nice offensive presence inside.

Shooting Guard:
Paul Pierce move to shooting guard when Jeff Green was playing so well that he could not be held on the bench any longer. However, there is quite the possibility that Pierce has played his last game in a Celtic uniform. That is very sad for a lot of people, including me, but his time has come for him to move on. Especially since Jeff Green took his starting spot at small forward. Avery Bradley is a decent player, he is not good offensively, but he is a shut down defender. He can score a little, but that is not his forte.  There is nobody worth taking in the first round at this position unless someone slides. They could go after OJ Mayo in free agency, but I doubt he is someone that Doc would want on the team. This position can be delegate to next season if need be since they do not have a second round pick.

Get Younger:
The Celtics simply need to get younger. Pierce and Garnett are simply too old. I know people have been saying it for years, but I think it finally showed this season. They will likely get rid of Pierce this offseason which will help the development of Jeff Green. Garnett will retire in a year or two which will help them develop young bigs like Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo. Not to mention Pierce and Garnett's salaries take up a lot of cap space and not having them on the team will give them much more wiggle room in free agency.

The Boston Celtics need to get younger all around. They are a very old team. Drafting a starting center will help kick-start that process. They need a shooting guard, but without a second round pick or much cap space it will be hard for them to get one. Maybe if or when they trade Pierce, he will be able to net them a decent shooting guard or some draft picks, both of which are very valuable. Getting younger is the main hurdle that they have to get over. If they do that, they can accomplish the rest of their goals. They will likely not make the playoffs next season, but that should be OK after a 6 year run of being in contention and a championship ring.
