Florida Gators Tight End Competition

Clay Burton is most likely going to be the starter this upcoming season. He needs to work on his hands, he dropped a fair amount of passes last season. Driskel needs to be able to trust his biggest target on the field. If Burton improves his hands, he will get a lot of looks next season. He could also work on his route running, if he is able to get himself open and create space, he could sufficiently replace Jordan Reed. Reed was Driskel's favorite target last season and I foresee the torch being passed onto Burton this season.

Tevin Westbrook is a good all around tight end. He is a good blocker, but not as good of a receiver. He saw action in all 13 games last season, but that was mostly on special teams. He has not seen significant action on offense in any of his two seasons in Florida. He is currently trying to fight off Kent Taylor and Colin Thompson.

Kent Taylor is entering into his sophomore season and could easily become a major player this season. He was the number one tight end out of his class according to Rivals.com. He is a big target, standing at 6-5 and weighing 223. He is agile and quite speedy for a guy his size. Taylor will be nipping at Westbrook's heals throughout the summer and into the season.

Colin Thompson is at the end of the depth chart for tight ends. He sat out last season because of a broken foot. It looks as if he is too far behind Taylor and Westbrook, in order to catch up in time for the beginning of the season.

Clay Burton is the obvious starter coming into the season, but the water gets murky after that. Westbrook and Tayor are going to be neck and neck going into the season, but I think Taylor pulls it out and becomes the primary backup before the season starts. Thompson is too far behind to catch up, in my mind. If Burton can become what Jordan Reed was last season, which he can, then he should be in for a very productive season. There is also a lot of potential in Kent Taylor and I think he will become a star before his time is up in Florida.
