Florida Gators QB Cometition

Jeff Driskel is the obvious starter coming into the season. He played well last season, but he needs to work on his passing game in order to take the Gators to the next level. He ran the offense very well last season, he was a rushing threat, but if he can learn how to take more shots down field, the offense will be in a much better place. He does not have many weapons on the outside, but that does not mean he wont be able to improve them as well as himself. If he puts the ball in the right place, it will be easier for receivers to get open. He also will not have Mike Gilislee next season. Matt Jones has proven he can be good, but it remains to be seen if he can pick up the slack left by Gilislee. Driskel will have to make more plays with his arm this year than he was ever asked to last season.

Jacoby Brissett transfered to North Carolina State this offseason because he was never going to get the playing time that he though he deserved. Tyler Murphy is now the backup quarterback, coming out of spring workouts. Many did not think much of him since he has only played in two games as a QB, but he has the skills in order to produce in this offense, in case Driskel goes down. He is more of a runner than a passer, but that would work out just fine in this offense.

Skyler Mornhinweg was thought to be the heir apparent when Jeff Driskel left for the pros, but it looks as if Driskel will not leave until after his senior season, giving Mornhinweg only his senior season to play. Mornhinweg was a four star recruit coming out of college, but it looks as if he is going to be a victim of bad timing in Florida. That is sad, but I am hoping the fans get to see a good senior season from him.

The Florida Gator quarterback situation is pretty much set until Driskel leaves, barring a major injury. If Driskel can improve his passing game, the Gator offense will be very tough to stop this season. Murphy and Mornhinweg will provide much needed depth if Driskel is injured, but I doubt they see more playing time than in that situation. I really think that Driskel will improve his passing game enough to give teams a scare that they cannot just guard the runs against the Gators.
