Broncos Release Willis McGahee

Willis McGahee, who was the starting running back, when healthy, the past two seasons, has been released by the Denver Broncos. It seems as if old age and the emergence of Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman have deemed him expendable. He did have fumbling problems last season and he suffered a torn MCL, which put him on the shelf for the season.

I will appreciate what McGahee did in Denver to help bridge the gap from a 4-12 team to a perennial Super Bowl Contender. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2011 and was on his way to that mark, in 2012, before he suffered a knee injury. He did make some mistakes, a dropped pass on 4th down in New England comes to mind, but he always seemed to make up for them.

I thought there was a possibility that he would be released, but not this early in the offseason. Apparently Ball and Hillman impressed the coaching staff enough for them to believe they can be a solid 1-2 punch. It is never a good sign for an old running back when your team drafts a running back in the second round. It seems as if McGahee did not have a place on this team after Ball was drafted because he no longer filled the need for starting, workhorse running back.

I appreciate all that McGahee did in Denver in his two seasons and I sincerely hope that he finds his way onto another roster before training camp.
