So What Do the Broncos Do Now?

Now the Doom is gone due to his agents stupidity the Broncos need to figure out what to do at the defensive end position. They could try to hash out another deal with Doom, but they have 3.25 million in dead money because of that so Doom would have to compensate that in his contract which would mean the Broncos would pay him around 5 million for the first year.

They could stand pat and have Wolfe and Ayers be the starters. This would not be ideal because neither would be able to replicate Dooms pass rushing production. Ayers showed strides last season when he got playing time, but he has been in the league 3 years now and has not lived up to his draft position. Wolfe is a good run stopper, but not that great of a pass rusher. He finished the season with 5 sacks, but a lot of those were coverage sacks or the QB simply just walked into him. Also they would have nobody to back them up. Malik Jackson is ok, but not fit to be a starter and Jeremy Beal has not panned out yet.

They could try to chase players in free agency, the best 3 options would be Dwight Freeny, Osi Umenyiora or John Abraham. All three of these players are north of 30 and are mostly pass rushers. They would not be long term solutions, but they would be likely to sign on considering the Broncos are Super Bowl contenders and these players are on their last legs.

The Broncos could also choose to pick a defensive end in the first couple of rounds. Damontre Moore could be an option since his value has fallen due to less a less than stellar combine. I like to place most of my emphasis on actual play and Moore played very well, amassing 12 sacks last season. Moore also lead the team with 85 tackles showing he is no slouch in run defense. Moore is from the same school as Von Miller so it would be nice to see them both tearing it up on the same team. Alex Okafor from Texas is another option in the first round. He has the family name to go along with production last season. He also had 12 sacks to go along with 4 forced fumbles and 16.5 tackles for loss. There are a lot of other options in the draft, but those were the two I decided to highlight.

It will be tough if the Broncos have to go on without Doom, but I think they will be able to manage if they can snag someone in the draft or free agency.
