A Look at the Running Back Position: Free Agency

The Broncos are going to get a running back one way or another. They will either take one in free agency or they will draft one in the middle rounds. There are two quality running backs available in free agency, but neither of them are long term solutions

Steven Jackson is one of those options, he still ran hard last season even though he suffered a couple of injuries. He has been on mediocre teams all his career. He would most likely jump at the prospect of being on a contending team. The problem is that Jackson is 30 years old. He could fall off at any moment considering he has a lot of carries under his belt. I think the Broncos should sign him to a 2 year deal with no guaranteed money in the second year. He would add a nice punch to the running game, something this team has not seen in a while.

Amahd Bradshaw would be a younger option at only 27 years of age. He has averaged at least 4.5 yards a carry in all but one season. He is also a really good 3rd down back. The downside is he is affected by a foot injury so he may not be able to hold up much longer. He would command more money than Jackson since he is younger, but I do not think he is the better option.

Other than these backs I dont see any other backs that the Broncos would consider since Mendenhall went to Arizona. They should take a long hard look at Steven Jackson, but if they cant get him they should go after Bradshaw. If they do sign Bradshaw they need to put an injury clause in the contract just in case his foot cannot hold up.
