Why The NBA Needs to Scrap the Lottery System

The current lottery system that the NBA employs is a scam of massive proportions. Whenever the worst team in any league doesn't get the #1 pick then the system is flawed. The Charlotte Bobcats have been the most recent victim of the NBA lottery system. They put together the worst season in NBA history, but somehow they don't get the first pick in the draft and a shot at a top flight superstar. The Bobcats missed out on star Power Forward Anthony Davis and may now look to trade their pick prior to the draft. They could look at Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, but he has nowhere near the talent of Anthony Davis. The Bobcats have not been the first victim of this Lottery system that does not work on any level.

The team with the worst record has not won the draft lottery since 2004 when the Magic won it and selected Dwight Howard. In fact since 1990 the team with the worst record has only won the draft lottery 3 times. Thats a total of 3 times in 22 years, that should not happen in any league. Teams with the worst record have missed out on 19 #1 picks including Shaq, Chris Webber, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Elton Brand, Yao Ming, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, John Wall and Kyrie Irving . If the NBA did its draft the correct way John Wall would be playing for the Brooklyn Nets. Blake Griffin would still be in Cali, but he would be a King. Imagine the Heat with Rose and Wade, maybe Lebron or Bosh don't go there because of the ensuing cap issues. Memphis could of had their choice at Durant and Oden. Lets face it, the whole landscape of the NBA has changed because of this draft lottery. If the Clippers don't have Griffin they aren't in the playoffs and the Kings might have been. If John Wall was on the Nets they would have never made the trade to acquire Deron Williams. Rose not playing for the Bulls? Where would they be now? Most likely not in the playoffs.

Numerous teams have missed out on great players because of this scam that is put on as a show by the NBA. Teams are getting robbed of great players because of this lottery. The NFL has the biggest draft spectacle on earth and they don't use a lottery which works just fine for them. The only prize for being in last place is a chance at the best prospect in the upcoming draft and teams are deprived of this. The Bobcats especially, if they trade out of the second pick they will most likely be in the same situation next year and they still won't know which pick they will end up with. Maybe the lottery favors them next year, but was it worth another season of sucking and 0 attendance? This is one thing that David Stern can conceivably fix in the upcoming years and if he does fans around the world should rejoice.
